The India Project

Gracie and Lottie: are travelling to India in September 2010 to offer jewellery training to women living at the MAHALIR ARAN TRUST, Dharmapuri, near Bangalore in the state of Tamil Nadu, Southern India. At M.A.T, women, children and others in need, are offered refuge, training and employment to enable them to flourish in a safe environment. We hope to provide them with skills that will enable them to make beautiful jewellery that will then be sold in the UK and worldwide to give sustainable and fair employment to the women working at the project.

Who is making this happen...

Just Trade - a company that supports projects Peru that offer fair employment to women. With the help of Just Trade they design, develop and make ranges of jewellery & accessories that are then sold in the UK & Worldwide.

Grace has been working for Just Trade for almost 12 months and it is through their desire to establish, and support another project working with marginalised people, that the trip to India has come about.

The jewellery collections that we are hoping to develop at Flowering Desert will be marketed and sold through Just Trade.

VIA Design - is a charity that has a fair trade textiles project at M.A.T in Tamil Nadu. They work in partnership with the ladies at Flowering Desert to offer secure support & employment to women who would otherwise not have been able to work. They make beautifully made textiles pieces for VIA to sell in the UK.

It is through Janet Rogers at VIA Design's support & advice that Just Trade has been able to diversify into developing a jewellery project in India.

Sponsors - we have been given support from so many kind friends in the UK. Some are financially sponsoring women through their entire training, others have given money for jewellery tools and materials, many many more have given invaluable advice. Thank you all so much.

Hopefully here you will be able to get a very small glimpse of the difference you are all making.
